Suncor Energy begins planned maintenance on oil sands upgrader

Press Release –

Fort McMurray, Alberta (Sept. 5, 2014) – Suncor Energy reports it has begun planned maintenance on one of the two oil sands upgraders (U1) at its oil sands operations near Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Approximately 1,500 employees and contractors will be involved in the work, which is scheduled to last approximately 11 weeks. During this period, the U1 complex will operate at reduced rates while the company’s other upgrader (U2) is currently scheduled to continue normal operations.

Suncor will focus on completing the maintenance work in a safe manner while minimizing impacts on our neighbours, our customers and the environment. Although the maintenance work may result in increased flaring, noise and traffic near Suncor’s operations, precautions have been taken to ensure these disruptions are kept to a minimum.

The planned maintenance is expected to support safe, reliable operation of upgrading assets. The expected production impact has been factored into Suncor’s annual guidance.
