Employment was little changed in May (+27,000; +0.1%) and the employment rate fell 0.1 percentage points to 61.3%.
Securities statistics, first quarter 2024
Net borrowings by Canadian corporations and governments in the form of debt securities totalled $106.3 billion in the first quarter of 2024, the largest amount since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the second quarter of 2020. Contributions to the financing activity from both the government and corporate sectors were almost even in the first quarter of 2024.
Industrial capacity utilization rates, first quarter 2024
Canadian industries operated at 78.5% of their production capacity in the first quarter, which was little changed from the rate in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Retail Commodity Survey, March 2024
Retail sales reached $63.4 billion in March, a decrease of 1.5% compared with the same month one year earlier. Lower sales were reported in 13 of the 18 commodity classes.

In 2022, total revenues earned by passenger bus and urban transit companies operating in Canada were $26.1 billion, an increase of 10.4% from 2021 and 13.0% above those reported in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
