Canada’s international transactions in securities, March 2024
Canadian investors acquired an unprecedented $35.6 billion of foreign securities in March, ending the first quarter with a record investment of $51.5 billion. Meanwhile, foreign investors increased their exposure to Canadian securities by $14.4 billion in March after divesting $4.3 billion in February.
Monthly credit aggregates, March 2024
In March, the total credit liabilities of households increased $9.3 billion (+0.3%) to reach $2,945.1 billion. Real estate secured debt, composed of both mortgage debt and home equity lines of credit, grew by $6.5 billion (+0.3%). Household mortgage debt rose $6.3 billion (+0.3% on a monthly basis; +3.5% on an annualized basis) in March, a slowdown compared with February (+4.2% on an annualized basis).
Investment in building construction, March 2024
Month over month, investment in building construction increased 4.5% to $20.4 billion in March. The residential sector was up 5.4% to $14.3 billion, while investment in the non-residential sector decreased 2.3% to $6.1 billion.
