Natural resource indicators, fourth quarter 2023

Real gross domestic product (GDP) of the natural resources sector rose 1.4% in the fourth quarter, after two consecutive quarterly declines. In 2023, real GDP of the natural resources sector decreased 1.7%, following two consecutive yearly increases.

Government finance statistics, fourth quarter 2023

The Canadian general government posted a deficit of $9.5 billion in the fourth quarter, an increase of $5.9 billion from the previous year. The higher deficit was the result of a $17.4 billion increase in expenses, which more than offset the $11.5 billion growth in revenue. The growth in expenses was driven by compensation of employees (+$7.7 billion, or +9.1%) and interest charges (+$4.2 billion, or +20.0%), while the increase in revenue was mainly attributable to income taxes.

Persons in one-parent families headed by an immigrant woman are most likely to be in low income

A new study released today, titled “Prevalence of low income among persons in one-parent families headed by an immigrant parent: An intersectional analysis,” uses data from the 2021 Census of Population to examine the prevalence of low income among persons in one-parent families (OPFs). The results show that persons in OPFs headed by an immigrant woman (26.5%) were most likely to be in low income in 2020, followed by persons in OPFs headed by a non-immigrant woman (24.1%), an immigrant man (21.4%) and a non-immigrant man (18.5%).

Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for February. Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales rose 0.7% in February. The largest increase was in the petroleum and coal subsector.
