Quarterly financial statistics for enterprises, third quarter 2024
Canadian corporations reported a decrease of $4.1 billion (-2.5%) in net income before taxes in the third quarter, reaching $157.4 billion. This drop impacted both the financial sector (-5.5%) and the non-financial sector (-1.3%).
Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, fourth quarter 2024
Cost- and labour-related challenges remain the top obstacles anticipated by businesses in the fourth quarter, though the proportion of businesses expecting cost- and labour-related obstacles has continued to ease.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, August 2024
In August, the business closure rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 4.8%, following a decline by a similar amount in July. The closure rate was 0.2 percentage points above its 2015-to-2019 monthly historical average in August. The business opening rate held relatively steady at 4.6% for the third consecutive month in August 2024 and was 0.1 percentage points below its historical average.
Full-time teaching staff at Canadian universities, 2023/2024
Today, Statistics Canada is releasing data on full-time teaching staff at universities for 2023/2024. That year, there were 48,960 full-time teachers at Canadian universities. Close to half (48.5%; 23,745) were professors at one of the 15 leading research universities that are members of U15 Canada. U15 Canada is an association of 15 leading research universities across Canada comprising a homogenous group of universities that receive a large portion of federal research funding.
Monthly Survey of Manufacturing: Advance indicator, October 2024
Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for October. Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales increased 1.3% in October. The largest increases were in the petroleum and coal product as well as transportation equipment subsectors.

Canadian Coroner and Medical Examiner Database, January 2006 to September 2024
Today, Statistics Canada is releasing new data from the Canadian Coroner and Medical Examiner Database (CCMED). The CCMED is a database developed at Statistics Canada in collaboration with the provincial and territorial Chief Coroners and Chief Medical Examiners and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The CCMED combines information from 12 provincial and territorial databases to provide national level information on the circumstances related to deaths reported to and investigated by coroners and medical examiners.
