Economic contribution of critical mineral production in Canada, 2023
The production of critical minerals in Canada has become increasingly important, with 34 minerals labelled as critical by Natural Resources Canada due to their crucial importance in today’s technologies and industries. Critical minerals support the green and digital economy and help ensure national security. They are used in a variety of products such as solar panels, smartphones, medical devices, electric vehicle batteries and defense applications. The importance of critical minerals in Canada is also reflected in the federal government’s investments, where two of the first five projects considered by the newly created Major Projects Offices includes mines extracting critical minerals.
Travel arrangement services, 2024
The operating revenue of the travel arrangement and reservation services industry group rose 7.1% to a record high of $16.5 billion in 2024. This was the first single-digit rate of change since 2019, suggesting a return to more typical conditions and the end of the phase of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Surveying and mapping services, 2024
Growth in the surveying and mapping services industries slowed for the third consecutive year in 2024, following two years of high interest rates and slower investment in new construction. Operating revenue for the surveying and mapping services industries grew 2.3% to $3.0 billion in 2024. Operating expenses also grew 2.3% to $2.7 billion, leaving the operating profit margin nearly unchanged from the previous year, at 12.0%.
