Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, October 2025

The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—increased by 21,200 (+0.1%) in October, largely offsetting a decline of 24,300 (-0.1%) in September. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was up 68,300 (+0.4%) in October.

Employment Insurance, October 2025

The number of Canadians receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits edged up (+1.1%; +6,200) to 553,000 in October. The number of beneficiaries has changed little since July, following an upward trend from January to June (+59,000; +12.0%).

Logging, 2024

Total revenue in the logging industry increased by $49.2 million (+0.4%) to $12.4 billion in 2024 after falling 0.3% in 2023. Revenue in 2024 was split almost equally between the logging (except contract) industry (50.6%) and the contract logging industry (49.4%). Revenue from logging activities—which excludes revenue from other sources, such as secondary business activities—was up 0.7% to $11.4 billion in 2024.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, September 2025

In September, the business opening rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 4.8%, following a 0.2 percentage point decline in the previous month. The business closure rate edged down 0.1 percentage points for a second consecutive month to settle at 4.7% in September. Both the opening and the closure rates were 0.1 percentage points above their respective 2015-to-2019 averages.
