Investment in building construction, November 2023
Investment in building construction rose 1.7% to $19.8 billion in November. The residential sector grew 2.2% to $13.7 billion, while investment in the non-residential sector edged up 0.4% to $6.0 billion.
Natural resource indicators, third quarter 2023
Real gross domestic product (GDP) of the natural resources sector decreased 0.6% in the third quarter, after edging up 0.1% in the second quarter. By comparison, the economy-wide real GDP fell 0.3% in the third quarter, following a 0.3% increase in the previous quarter.
Working from home in Canada
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a substantial increase in work from home in Canada. This increase in telework has potentially important implications for numerous aspects of the economy and society such as the housing market, office rental space and economic activity in downtown areas, productivity, wage growth, worker turnover, family-work balance, childcare, commuting, public transit, and greenhouse gas emissions. A new release, “Research to Insights: Working from home in Canada,” explores some of these implications.
Accommodation services, 2022
Operating revenue for the accommodation services subsector climbed to a record $29.6 billion in 2022, a 52.0% increase over 2021. The subsector has now recovered from declines caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with operating revenues 9.6% higher in 2022 compared with 2019. The bounce back in operating revenue was also fuelled by inflationary pressures that pushed traveller accommodation prices up by an unprecedented 29.3% from 2021 to 2022.

Today’s release includes new and updated adjusted counts of death from the Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database, covering the period from January 3, 2021, to November 4, 2023.
