The number of Canadians receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits was little changed in January (+0.3%; +1,600) and stood at 468,000.
Trends in online banking and shopping
Internet use in Canada is prolific, with 94% of Canadians going online for personal use in 2022, up from 91% in 2018. Not only are more Canadians using the Internet since the COVID-19 pandemic, but more are managing their personal and household finances online.
New Housing Price Index, February 2024
The national index edged up 0.1% month over month in February. Prices were up in 6 of the 27 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) surveyed, while prices were unchanged in 19 CMAs and declined in 2. This marks the first monthly increase in the index since August 2023.
Monthly credit aggregates, January 2024
In January, the total credit liabilities of households grew by $8.8 billion (+0.3%) to reach $2,928.6 billion. Real estate secured debt, composed of both mortgage debt and home equity lines of credit, increased $6.2 billion (+0.3%). Household mortgage debt rose $5.4 billion (+0.2%), a deceleration in growth compared with December (+0.3%). Compared with January 2023, household mortgage debt increased 3.4% in January 2024, marking the slowest year-over-year increase since April 2001.
