Canadian international merchandise trade, January 2024
In January, Canada’s merchandise imports decreased 3.8%, while exports fell 1.7%. As a result, Canada’s merchandise trade balance changed position for a second consecutive month, moving from a deficit of $863 million in December to a surplus of $496 million in January.
Building permits, January 2024
The total monthly value of building permits in Canada increased 13.5% from December to $10.8 billion in January.
Canadian international trade in services, January 2024
Canada’s monthly international trade in services deficit widened from $0.7 billion in December to $1.3 billion in January. Overall, exports of services decreased 1.6% to $17.0 billion, while imports of services rose 1.5% to $18.3 billion.
Securities statistics, fourth quarter 2023
Canadian governments and corporations borrowed a net $71.7 billion in the form of debt securities in the fourth quarter, up from net issuances of $28.7 billion in the previous quarter. The financing activity in the fourth quarter was mostly in Canadian dollars and was led by the government sector.
