Canada’s balance of international payments, third quarter 2024
Canada’s current account balance (on a seasonal adjusted basis) posted a $3.2 billion deficit in the third quarter, narrowing $1.5 billion from the previous quarter. In the financial account, inflows of funds from abroad to finance the current account deficit came primarily from foreign investment in Canadian debt securities.
Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, September 2024
The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—fell by 57,400 (-0.3%) in September, following little change in August and an increase of 39,500 (+0.2%) in July. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was up 94,900 (+0.5%) in September.
Visitor Travel Survey, second quarter 2024
In the second quarter, visitors from the United States and overseas made 8.2 million trips to Canada, up 11.0% from the same quarter in 2023. Nearly four out of five trips (78.4%) were made by US residents from April to June 2024.
National Travel Survey, second quarter 2024
During the second quarter, Canadian residents took 79.2 million trips in Canada and abroad, up 1.2% from the same quarter of 2023 and an increase of 3.0% from the same period in 2019. Most of the trips in the second quarter of 2024 were domestic (88.3%), followed by trips to the United States (8.2%). The remainder were overseas trips (3.5%).
Screened passenger traffic at Canadian airports, October 2024
In October, 4.7 million passengers passed through pre-board security screening at checkpoints operated at Canada’s eight largest airports, 3.6% higher than in October 2023 and 5.2% above the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level in October 2019.
Energy statistics, September 2024
Primary energy production rose 0.4% in September, with crude oil (+1.2%) contributing the most to the increase. Secondary energy production edged down 0.3%, with refined petroleum products (-0.8%) leading the decrease.
Canada’s population estimates: Census families and households, 2024
Estimates of the number of census families and households for Canada, the provinces and the territories on July 1, for the years 2023 and 2024, are now available. The estimates of the number of census families are broken down by family structure (couple or one-parent). The estimates of the number of households are broken down by size. Revised estimates on July 1 for the years 2016 to 2022 are also available.
Study: Arts, Entertainment and Recreation Industries, 2023
Today, Statistics Canada is publishing “Workforce insights: Demographics in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector from 2015 to 2023,” the first of a three-study series. This paper explores the demographic differences among employees in the performing arts industries, spectator sports and related industries, and amusement and recreation industries by leveraging administrative data to examine the workforce distribution by gender, age and full-time work status. Results show that systemic trends vary by industry, with little variation across the years studied.
