The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—increased by 21,600 (+0.1%) in July, following a decline of 9,100 (-0.1%) in June.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, June 2025

In June, the business opening rate edged down 0.1 percentage points to 4.7% after settling at 4.8% in the previous three months. The business closure rate also edged down 0.1 percentage points to 4.7%, following a 0.2 percentage point increase in May. In June, the business opening rate was equal to its 2015-to-2019 historical average while the closure rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than its historical average.

Oilseed processors crushed 867.9 thousand tonnes of canola in August, down 10.4% from July and down 2.0% from August 2024. Oil production reached 367.3 thousand tonnes in August 2025, while meal production was 514.9 thousand tonnes.
