Canada’s economy continued to recover from the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, with real gross domestic product by industry growing by 4.1% from 2021. Nationally, overall energy use increased 3.2% and greenhouse gas emissions rose 2.3% compared with one year earlier.

In November, the preliminary number of international arrivals to Canada by air and automobile reached 4.8 million, up 8.4% from November 2023.
Environmental taxes in Canada, 2021
The total environmental taxes generated in Canada reached $31 billion in 2021, up 17.0% (+$26 billion) from 2020, primarily due to an 18.8% increase in total energy taxes. Total energy taxes includes energy and fuel for transport taxes, carbon taxes and emission trading permits.
