Consumer Price Index, May 2024

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.9% on a year-over-year basis in May, up from a 2.7% gain in April. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.3% in May.

Government finance statistics, first quarter 2024

In the first quarter, the Canadian general government recorded a deficit of $11.7 billion, a $6.5 billion increase compared with the same quarter one year earlier. The deficit expansion was due to a $22.0 billion increase in expenses, outpacing the $15.4 billion growth in revenue mainly attributable to personal and corporate income taxes.

In May, 4.6 million passengers passed through pre-board security screening at checkpoints operated at Canada’s eight largest airports, an increase of 6.7% from May 2023.

Today, Statistics Canada is releasing an infographic entitled “Gender diversity of Canadian postsecondary students, 2021/2022.” Using data from the Postsecondary Student Information System and the Census of Population, 2021, this infographic provides information on enrolment in Canadian public postsecondary institutions for transgender and non-binary people.

Monthly Survey of Manufacturing: Flash estimate, May 2024

Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for May. Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales increased 0.2% in May. The largest increases were in the aerospace product and parts industry group as well as the food product subsector.
