Consumer Price Index, October 2024
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.0% on a year-over-year basis in October, up from a 1.6% increase in September. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.3% in October.
Housing challenges related to affordability, adequacy, condition and discrimination, August 2 to September 15, 2024
Nearly half (45%) of Canadians reported being very concerned about housing affordability because of the rising costs of housing or rent, according to the most recent cycle of the Canadian Social Survey. However, Canadians face many other housing challenges beyond affordability, including suitability, condition and experiences of discrimination when seeking housing.
Monthly credit aggregates, September 2024
In September, the total credit liabilities of households rose 0.4% (+$10.5 billion) to reach $2,993.1 billion, following a 0.3% increase in August. Real estate secured debt, composed of both mortgage debt and home equity lines of credit, grew 0.4% (+$8.6 billion) in September. Household mortgage debt increased 0.4% (+$8.0 billion), an acceleration compared with August (+0.3%). In September, the policy interest rate decreased 25 basis points to 4.25%.
Railway carloadings, September 2024
In September, the volume of cargo carried by Canadian railways edged down 0.8% from September 2023 to 30.9 million tonnes. Higher shipments of iron ores as well as some agricultural and food products moderated the overall decline.

Quality of life indicators from the Canadian Social Survey, third quarter 2024
Tables for 11 indicators in Canada’s Quality of Life Framework have been updated to include Canadian Social Survey data collected from July to September 2024 (third quarter of 2024). These indicators include life satisfaction, sense of meaning and purpose, future outlook, loneliness, someone to count on, sense of belonging to local community, satisfaction with time use, satisfaction with local environment, discrimination and unfair treatment, confidence in institutions, and trust in others.
