Canadian international merchandise trade, June 2020
In June, Canadian merchandise imports and exports rebounded sharply, mostly on the strength of motor vehicles and parts. Imports rose 21.8% and exports were up 17.1%. Canada’s merchandise trade deficit with the world widened from $1.3 billion in May to $3.2 billion in June.
Canadian international trade in services, June 2020
Canada’s monthly international trade in services balance went from a surplus of $232 million in May to a deficit of $727 million in June. Overall, imports of services increased 17.0% to $8.8 billion and exports rose 4.1% to $8.1 billion, as Canada’s international trade in services began to show signs of recovery following declines due to business closures and travel restrictions related to COVID-19.
Study: Monthly business openings and closures: Experimental series for Canada, the provinces and territories, and census metropolitan areas, 2015 to 2020
New experimental series on monthly business openings and closures show that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in business closures and a decrease in business openings. In April 2020, 88,187 business closures were observed in the Canadian business sector, more than twice the level observed in April 2019. By comparison, openings declined by almost one-quarter over the same period.
