Natural resource indicators, first quarter 2020
Real gross domestic product (GDP) of the natural resources sector edged down 0.4% in the first quarter, the third consecutive quarterly decline, although not as sharp as the decline in the economy-wide real GDP (-2.1%).
Recent developments in the Canadian economy, COVID-19, second edition
The magnitude of change in the Canadian economy since the onset of COVID-19 has been profound. From February to May, total employment has fallen by over 2.7 million, as the unemployment rate rose to a record high 13.7%. A flash estimate of gross domestic product (GDP), released by Statistics Canada in late May, projected an 11% decline in real GDP in April, following March’s 7.2% decrease.

Just over half of Canadians aged 15 and older (54%) reported excellent or very good mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. A new study released today by Statistics Canada explores the self-perceived mental health of Canadians, and the relationships between mental health and concerns related to the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the financial stability of Canadians, with extensive job loss and reduced hours of work. Experts in food insecurity have signalled that the financial impacts of this pandemic could lead to an increase in the number of Canadians living in a situation of food insecurity.
Food services and drinking places, April 2020
Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector fell 39.7% (seasonally adjusted) to $2.4 billion in April compared with the previous month, with businesses across the country being closed for the entire month due to COVID-19 regulations. Lower sales were reported across all industry groups and in every province.
Monthly Survey of Manufacturing: Flash estimate, May 2020
Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for the month of May. The advance results for May indicate that manufacturing sales rose 6.2%, as many manufacturers resumed production after full or partial showdowns in April. Owing to its preliminary nature, this figure is expected to be revised.
