Farm income, 2024 (revised data)

Realized net income for Canadian farmers fell by $3.3 billion (-26.0%) to $9.4 billion in 2024. This was the largest percentage decrease in realized net income since 2018. Excluding cannabis, realized net income was down 23.1% to $9.7 billion in 2024.

Farm cash receipts, January to September 2025

Farm cash receipts in Canada totalled $73.7 billion in the first three quarters, up $2.1 billion (+2.9%) from the same period in 2024. Receipts for livestock (+$3.8 billion) rose in the first three quarters of 2025, while crop receipts (-$992.5 million) and program payments (-$658.9 million) declined.

Lessons from the United States 2018/2019 steel and aluminum tariffs

It will take some time to determine the full impact of the US tariffs on the Canadian economy in 2025. Nevertheless, insight into the impacts of the new tariffs can be gained by examining the effects of tariffs in the recent past. A new study examines how Canadian steel and aluminum producers adjusted to 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum imposed by the United States from June 2018 to May 2019.

2021 Census: Non-permanent residents who were missed

It is now possible to consult the study titled “Non-Permanent Residents Missed in the 2021 Census” in the Demographic Documents series. This article examines the missed rates for non-permanent residents (NPRs) using data from the Census Undercoverage Study and administrative data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The study finds that the NPR missed rate in the 2021 Census decreased compared with the previous census and that certain characteristics of NPRs are correlated with being missed.
