Artist-run centre Tribe collaborates with Mendel for one of gallery’s final shows
As the Mendel Art Gallery prepares to close its doors, one local arts organization is using the space to celebrate the past and get excited about the future. Tribe, one of the first First Nations artist-run centres in Canada, is 20 years old this year.
Wanda Nanibush, a Toronto-based artist and activist, said the centre has had a huge impact on First Nations art.
“It’s been monumental in changing people’s perceptions of what First Nations art is and can be. Their focus on some radical contemporary work that’s very challenging is one of the ways in which they’ve definitely opened the doors for indigenous art and changed people’s mind not about the art but also the people and the politics.”
