2014 National Aboriginal Law Conference

Nation-Building under Land Claims Agreements, Treaties and Self-Government Agreements

June 19-20, 2014 | Frobisher Inn | Iqaluit, Nunavut

Conference Co-Chairs:
Cindy Kieu, Government of Nunavut (Iqaluit)
Kathryn Deo, Arbutus Law Group LLP (Victoria)

If you’ve ever wanted to journey to the Canadian Arctic, here is your opportunity.  The 2014 CBA National Aboriginal Law Conference will be held in the capital of Canada’s youngest territory Iqaluit, Nunavut from June 19-20.

The theme of the conference is “Nation-Building under Land Claims Agreements, Treaties and Self-Government Agreements”.  Join us at this ground-breaking summit, where we will explore the practical, on-the-ground implications and challenges of implementing modern land claim agreements, treaties, and other similar agreements.  Through the theme of Nation-building, we will examine issues such as environmental and natural resources management, governance, revenue generation, and social issues.  There is something for everyone, even if your practice doesn’t include negotiating treaties or Land Claims Agreements.

With the arctic tundra as our backdrop, we will cover a wide range of topics through a combination of plenary groups and break-out sessions and share best practices and lessons learned from leading practitioners and academics from across Canada.

Some of our topics include:

  • Overview of land claims agreements, treaties, and similar agreements
  • Implementation of Agreements
  • Case Study of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement
  • Social Issues
  • Taxation and Revenue Generation
  • Governance
  • Land, Environment and Natural Resource Management
  • Mining, Exploration and Natural Resource Development
  • Financing of Land Claims
  • Conflicts of interest, ethical issues, and stress management for Aboriginal law practitioners
  • Continental Shelf Delimitations under UNCLOS
  • Lessons to be Learned

Confirmed speakers include Tom Berger, Bob Rae, Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come, Sheila Fraser, and The Honourable Paul Okilak.

Don’t miss this chance to participate in this unique location, with excellent speakers and a timely and thought provoking program. See you there!
