Toronto – June 13, 2014 – the 4th Newfoundland & Labrador and Quebec Mining Forum set for October 21-22 at The Labrador West Arts & Culture Centre, Labrador City, NL will provide participants with an overview of the opportunities that the continued exploration and establishment of mines brings to the provinces of NL and QC, and Eastern Canada overall. It will also provide strategies for mining investment and exploration; employment model planning and management; development of opportunities; and sources of capital and engagement of First Nations and near-by communities.

Our conference’s keynote speakers will be The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works, who is the Minister Responsible for Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Member for Labrador West, and Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador. The conference will also count with the presence of Co-Chairs Paul F. Wilkinson, Ph.D. Senior Vice-President of Environmental and Social Affairs at New Millennium Iron Corp., and Larry D. Innes, Partner at Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP, and Special Advisor at Canadian Boreal Initiative.

The conference will have the remarkable participations of Dr. David Liverman, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Mines Branch from the Department of Natural Resources at the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Robert Sauvé, Secretary General at Plan Nord who will discuss the current landscape of projects in the region: active mining projects, expansions, and closures. Euclide Hache, United Steelworkers Area Staff Rep for Labrador N.L. and Member of Standing Committee Certification (M.I.H.R.), Karen Oldford, Mayor to Labrador City, Réjean Porlier, Mayor of Sept-Îles, and Colin Vardy, Mayor of the town of Wabush will form a discussion roundtable which will cover the economic and social consequences that occur when mining projects end or are delayed, as well as measures that can be used to mitigate this damage.

Special presentations will discuss the undertaking of revitalizing abandoned exploration and mining projects, the burden on the environment and strategies for sustainability, joint venture partnerships with First Nations communities, project financing, the role of exploration companies and First Nations in Ontario working together for a mutual benefit, engaging aboriginal communities, the roles that municipalities have to play, and the risk involved in abandoning a mining project.
