AAFN and GRFN to contest RHT Lawyer’s fees in court.

AnIkameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation (AAFN) and Garden River First Nation (GRFN) are challenging,. legal fees brought forth by. Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation process and litigation lawyers. Both First Nations are asking the Ontario Superior Court to reconsider and review the extremely high legal fees brought about by the litigation terms. At the time that the five percent fee was agreed upon in 2012 the amount that was being sought was expected to be considerably lower than what was awarded. of 10 billion is $510 million. Simply put: GRFN and AAFN feel that $510 million is not a fair and reasonable legal fee and are requesting that the Ontario Supreme Court review the matter.

After hearing of AAFN’s plans to refute the total cost of the fees, Ogimaa Karen Bell brought it to the attention of Council. After discussion, Oglimaa Bell was provided direction by Council to support and join AAFN In the request for transparency about the legal fees.

GRFN Chief and Council are very cognizant that the money will be and is expected to be disbursed in August and In no way are stalling or preventing distributions. All along this journey was the request for transparency and accountability relating to the legal fee amount. Both communities are adamant that the amount identified publicly by the law firm for the settlement is extremely high. If the court rules in favor this will mean a lower amount to the nations of the beneficiaries.
