First Nations, Sydney leaders optimistic
SYDNEY — A dispute that threatened to derail talks on the development of Sydney Harbour seems to have been resolved after First Nation chiefs from Membertou and Eskasoni met behind closed doors with municipal and federal officials Thursday.
Chief Terry Paul of Membertou, Chief Leroy Denny of Eskasoni and Kevin Saccary, deputy mayor of Cape Breton Regional Municipality, emerged from the meeting and said all parties are in agreement that talks on aboriginal consultation around Sydney Harbour will be held as soon as possible.
The municipality hosted the meeting to restart the aboriginal consultation process around federal harbour divestiture.
