HALIFAX. x–07s. The Assembly of First Nations has voted in favour of electing a new chief later this year at a special chiefs assembly in Winnipeg. Ghislain Picard, regional chief for Quebec and Labrador, says he is considering running for the position, although he has not made a final decision. Picard says he supported a December election.

TAG: The position became vacant after Shawn Atleo unexpectedly stepped down in May following five years at the helm. Atleo resigned under criticism for his support of proposed changes to federal legislation related to aboriginal education.
