Alberta pipeline deal paves way for a first ‘national interest’ project designation – iPolitics

Should a new bitumen pipeline to the Pacific be designated in the national interest, Ottawa confirms it will make “an appropriate adjustment” to the oil tanker ban off the B.C. coast.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Ottawa and Alberta includes commitments on a wide range of issues, but most importantly, it hints at how a pipeline project could obtain a national interest designation that would allow for fast-tracking and bypassing of existing regulations.

The agreement was signed by prime minister Mark Carney and Alberta premier Danielle Smith in Calgary on Thursday.

It declares that one or more “private sector constructed and financed pipelines” are a priority to increase exports to Asian markets.
