Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 Nations calls on Canada to step up on separation issue
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government will appeal a court ruling that threw out a citizen-led petition on Alberta separation, saying the decision “interferes with the democratic rights of hundreds of thousands of Albertans.”
Smith said in a televised speech Thursday night the recent ruling incorrectly applied the duty to consult First Nations and should not prevent citizens from pursuing a referendum through a legal petition.
“Our government will therefore be appealing this decision to Alberta’s Court of Appeal, and if necessary, the Supreme Court of Canada,” Smith said.
