All eyes on Liberal-Bloc rematch in Terrebonne, Que., as byelection voters head to the polls – iPolitics

The House of Commons may be poised to reopen for business following the two-week Easter hiatus, but for the next 24 hours or so, the most closely-watched — and arguably highest-stakes — political battle is set to play out across the three ridings holding by-elections today, and although the Toronto-area seats of Scarborough Southwest and University — Rosedale are widely considered to be safe Liberal territory, the two-way race between the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois to reclaim Terrebonne, Que., is still too close to call.

“The Liberals have been pulling out all the stops to hold onto the Montreal suburb in Quebec after winning it by a single vote last year, then seeing that result nullified by the courts,” Canadian Press reports.

“Political analyst Philippe Fournier of the polling aggregator site 338Canada said holding onto the riding would give the governing party a boost and show they still have momentum after the last election. But if Carney’s Liberals lose Terrebonne to the Bloc Québécois, that would send a signal that they are ‘not so invincible’ and the Bloc could be starting to rebound.”
