Annual Quebec Native Women Conference 2014

Quebec Native Women invites you to its annual conference on November 15 and 16.

“PROMOTING ABORIGINAL WOMEN’S TRADITIONAL GOVERNANCE”

Event which will be the culmination of a far-reaching conversation on the issue of traditional governance.

This annual conference will bring together some 150 women from First Nations communities across Quebec, and will be held on November 15 and 16 at the Sheraton Laval.

“For millennia, women played a key role in the governing our nations. The colonization of our people and the imposition of various measures, including the Indian Act, transformed our traditional governance and women’s role in managing our internal policies. This conversation was therefore necessary, and the Annual Conference will give us an opportunity to propose concrete initiatives to highlight the traditional governance of our nations, in which women play a decisive role,” said Viviane Michel, QNW’s president.

Since August, a series of regional FAQ meetings has taken place, in Uashat (August 30), Whapmagoostui (September 6-7), Odanak (September 13), Kanesatake (September 13), Kawawachikamak (September 20) and Manawan (September 27). Participants at these meetings proposed initiatives and identified areas for discussion at the Annual Conference. A total of 10 regional consultations were held with the nine First Nations in Quebec, as well as one with the urban community, to encourage reflection on traditional female governance.

The Annual Conference on November 15 and 16 will include panel discussions and workshops where participants will be able to boost their knowledge and skills in governance and leadership. They will also consider ways to take action and engage their respective communities, as well as identifying concrete actions that would lead to the establishment of genuine governmental autonomy to bolster the preservation and revitalization of the different aboriginal cultures. Recommendations arising from the consultations and the deliberation process will be published in Mocassin Telegram magazine and on the QNW website (www.faq-qnw.org).
