Trans Mountain required seven reroutes and a total overhaul of its consultation with First Nations to move forward, and Alberta will need to apply these lessons in mitigation if it wants a pipeline to the northwest coast.
The Trans Mountain expansion was a highly controversial project, but it eventually came online despite court challenges, massive cost overruns and strong opposition from Indigenous groups.
And as Alberta makes a play to build another controversial pipeline to B.C., it may want to heed the project’s main lesson — mitigation and accommodation are possible, but they require a massive effort from all parties from the get-go.
