Assembly of First Nations Congratulates Newly Elected Nishnawbe Aski
Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler and Executive Council
(Ottawa, ON): Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde congratulates Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler and Executive Council elected yesterday at the 34th Keewaywin Conference in Aroland First Nation in Treaty 9 territory.
“I congratulate Alvin Fiddler on his election as Grand Chief of the largest political territorial organization in the Ontario region,” said National Chief Perry Bellegarde. “Grand Chief Fiddler has a strong commitment to upholding rights and a dedicated vision for addressing gaps in services for First Nations, especially in health, justice and policing. I look forward to working with Grand Chief Fiddler and supporting those efforts at the national level.”
NAN Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler was elected in the first ballot yesterday by NAN Chiefs at the 34th Annual Keewaywin Conference in Aroland First Nation. He replaces former Grand Chief Harvey Yesno.
Alvin Fiddler was raised in Muskrat Dam and has lived in a number of NAN communities. He has more than 20 years of leadership experience, including three terms as NAN Deputy Grand Chief. Grand Chief Fiddler has made major contributions in the areas of health policy and planning, justice, community healing and wellness, and the priorities of women and youth. He has led advocacy efforts for a number of justice initiatives, including inquests into the Ipperwash, Goudge, the Kashechewan fire and the tragic death of student deaths in the NAN region, as well as the Iacobucci Review.
“I commend the work of former Grand Chief Harvey Yesno and his long-standing leadership in NAN territory and the region,” said National Chief Bellegarde. “His commitment and dedication to achieving self-determination through sustainable business and economic opportunities and community institutions provides a solid foundation for continued efforts in this area in NAN territory and across the region and country.”
Three Deputy Grand Chiefs Anna Betty Achneepineskum, Derek Fox and Terry Waboose, were also elected in Aroland late yesterday to round out the NAN Executive Council.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation is a political territorial organization representing 49 First Nation communities in Treaty 9 and Treaty 5 territory in Ontario.

L’Assemblée des Premières Nations félicite le nouveau Grand Chef de la Nation
Nishnawbe Aski, Alvin Fiddler, et son conseil exécutif
Ottawa (Ontario) – Le Chef national de l’Assemblée des Premières Nations (APN) Perry Bellegarde félicite le Grand Chef de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski, Alvin Fiddler, et son conseil exécutif, qui ont été élus hier au 34e congrès Keewaywin tenu dans la Première Nation d’Aroland, sur le territoire du traité no 9.
« Je félicite Alvin Fiddler pour son élection à titre de Grand Chef de la plus grande organisation territoriale et politique de la région de l’Ontario », a déclaré le Chef national Perry Bellegarde. « Le Grand Chef Fiddler est fermement déterminé à défendre les droits des Premières Nations et vise à éliminer à tout prix les lacunes qui existent dans les services qui leur sont offerts, en particulier dans les domaines de la santé, de la justice et de la police. Je me réjouis de collaborer avec lui et d’appuyer ses efforts à l’échelle nationale. »
Le Grand Chef Alvin Fiddler a été élu au premier tour par les chefs de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski, hier, au 34e congrès annuel Keewaywin de la Première Nation d’Aroland. Il succède au Grand Chef Harvey Yesno.
Alvin Fiddler a grandi à Muskrat Dam et a vécu dans plusieurs communautés de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski. Il a plus de 20 ans d’expérience en leadership et a notamment effectué trois mandats de Grand Chef adjoint de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski. Le Grand Chef Fiddler a énormément contribué à faire progresser les domaines suivants : politique et planification des soins de santé, justice, guérison et bien-être des communautés, besoins prioritaires des femmes et des jeunes. Il a mené des efforts de défense des intérêts des Autochtones dans plusieurs initiatives judiciaires, notamment lors des enquêtes Ipperwash et Goudge, ainsi que des enquêtes menées sur l’incendie de Kashechewan et sur la mort tragique d’étudiants dans la région de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski, et lors de l’examen Iacobucci.
« Je tiens à souligner le travail et le leadership de longue date du Grand Chef sortant, Harvey Yesno, dans le territoire et la région de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski, a poursuivi le Chef national Bellegarde. Son engagement et sa volonté en matière de réalisation de l’autodétermination au moyen d’activités commerciales et économiques viables et de la participation des institutions communautaires fournissent une base solide pour la poursuite des efforts dans ce domaine sur le territoire de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski ainsi que dans toute la région et dans tout le pays. »
Trois Grands Chefs adjoints ont également été élus à Aroland, hier à la fin de la journée, pour compléter le conseil exécutif de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski. Il s’agit d’Anna Betty Achneepineskum, Derek Fox et Terry Waboose.
La Nation Nishnawbe Aski est une organisation politique et territoriale représentant 49 communautés des Premières Nations sur le territoire du traité no 9 et du traité no 5 en Ontario.
