Assembly of First Nations National Chief Calls for Immediate Investigation and Action in Wake of Tragic House Fire at Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation in Saskatchewan

(Ottawa, ON) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde today issued the following statement on the tragic house fire at Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation in Saskatchewan that claimed the lives of two young children:

“We offer our condolences to the family and the community on this terrible tragedy.  Right now we don’t have all the details about how this happened and we want to see a full investigation into this incident followed by action to ensure this doesn’t happen again.  We can all agree that no community should be without proper fire protection and services.”

The fire occurred Tuesday, February 17, at Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, approximately 310 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  Reports indicate the fire started early in the morning and claimed the lives of an 18 month old girl and a two year old boy.

Le Chef national de l’Assemblée des Premières Nations réclame une enquête et des mesures
immédiates à la suite de l’incendie tragique d’une résidence au sein de la
Première Nation de Makwa Sahgaiehcan en Saskatchewan

(Ottawa, Ont.) – Le Chef national de l’Assemblée des Premières Nations (APN), Perry Bellegarde, a fait aujourd’hui la déclaration suivante à la suite du tragique incendie d’une résidence au sein de la Première Nation de Makwa Sahgaiehcan en Saskatchewan, qui a coûté la vie à deux jeunes enfants :

« Nous offrons nos condoléances à la famille et à la communauté à la suite de cette terrible tragédie. Nous ne disposons pas encore de toutes les informations relatives à ce sinistre et nous voulons qu’une enquête approfondie soit menée, et que des mesures soient prises pour éviter qu’un tel drame ne se reproduise. Nous pouvons tous convenir qu’aucune communauté ne devrait être privée de services adéquats de protection contre l’incendie. »

Le drame est survenu le mardi 17 février, dans la communauté de la Première Nation de Makwa Sahgaiehcan qui est située à environ 310 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Saskatoon (Saskatchewan). Les rapports indiquent que l’incendie s’est déclaré tôt le matin et a coûté la vie à une petite fille de 18 mois et un petit garçon de 2 ans.
