Build Canada Homes: A Bold Opportunity—If We Get It Right – CHRA

Across the country, people are united by an ongoing frustration with our housing system. There’s a lot riding on Mark Carney’s promise to make housing affordable for Canadians. This is to take shape through Build Canada Homes – a mission-driven organization to deliver new affordable housing, quickly and at scale. This is a welcome approach; for too long, we’ve been building inadequately – both in numbers and in affordability.

But one critical question remains: Affordable for whom? If the answer is everyone, we need a candid conversation about how we can achieve that goal.

Canadians are overwhelmingly concerned about the state of housing, and believe that the federal government has a large role to play. We know the market can deliver affordable homes for a good number of households, rented and owned.
