Business Network for Aboriginal Youth Celebrates End of Third Year

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

Aboriginal students from across Nova Scotia who participated in this year’s Business Network for Aboriginal Youth celebrated the end of their program this week. The closing conference began in Millbrook First Nation on June 3 and ended in Indian Brook First Nation on June 4.

The Business Network for Aboriginal Youth links 30 Aboriginal high school students with six Aboriginal business mentors. The program was established in 2011 by the Purdy Crawford Chair in Aboriginal Business Studies at Cape Breton University with the goal of attracting Aboriginal students to the study of business.

Dr. Keith Brown, holder of the Purdy Crawford Chair and Vice-President of International and Aboriginal Affairs at Cape Breton University delivered opening remarks, followed by an opening prayer from Sister Dorothy Moore, Elder in Residence, Unama’ki College. The students were then treated to a variety of workshops, presentations and activities.

The highlight of the conference was the annual “Rant Your Resume” challenge. Each student was required to use their program-issued Smartphone to film a 30-second video resume. The students and their mentors then had the opportunity to watch all of the videos. The conference ended with an awards ceremony and closing remarks from Ms. Mary Beth Doucette, Executive Director of the Purdy Crawford Chair.

The BNAY program originated as a pilot in Nova Scotia and is currently in the process of becoming a national mentorship program.
