Canada and B.C. to bring clean energy to the Peace region

VANCOUVER – Investing in infrastructure that brings clean electricity to Canadian businesses, including those in remote and northern communities, helps create good middle-class jobs, a low-carbon economy and greener communities.
Amarjeet Sohi, federal Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of François-Philippe Champagne, federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, was joined by John Horgan, Premier of British Columbia, and Chris O’Riley, president and chief operating officer of BC Hydro, to announce federal funding for the Peace Region Electricity Supply (PRES) project.
Electricity demand in the South Peace Region is increasing due to natural gas exploration and development. To meet current and future demand, BC Hydro will expand the existing transmission infrastructure by building two parallel 230-kilovolt power lines between the future Site C Substation near Fort St. John and the existing Groundbirch Substation, located about 30 kilometres east of Chetwynd.
Once complete, industries and businesses in the Peace region will have access to a cleaner supply of energy to power their operations, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 2.6 megatonnes per year.
The Government of Canada is providing up to $83.6 million for this project through the Investing in Canada Plan, while BC Hydro is providing the remaining $205.4 million.
Helping industry move to clean, renewable energy, like hydroelectricity, is part of the CleanBC climate action plan to power B.C.’s growing economy and make life better for everyone.

- Budget 2019, Investing in the Middle Class, is the federal government’s plan to create more well-paying jobs, put home ownership within reach for more Canadians, help working people get the training they need to succeed, support seniors and lay the foundation for national pharmacare.
- With many municipalities across Canada facing serious infrastructure deficits, Budget 2019 includes a one-time top-up of $2.2 billion to the federal Gas Tax Fund to help address short-term priorities in municipalities and First Nations communities.
- The federal Budget 2019 builds on the Investing in Canada Plan, under which the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in community infrastructure across the country.

VANCOUVER – Les investissements dans les infrastructures qui fournissent de l’électricité propre aux entreprises canadiennes, y compris celles des collectivités éloignées et nordiques, aident à créer de bons emplois pour la classe moyenne, une économie à faibles émissions de carbone et des collectivités plus écologiques.
Aujourd’hui, l’honorable Amarjeet Sohi, ministre des Ressources naturelles, au nom de l’honorable François-Philippe Champagne, ministre de l’Infrastructure et des Collectivités, était accompagné de l’honorable John Horgan, Premier ministre de la Colombie-Britannique, et de Chris O’Riley, président-chef de l’exploitation de BC Hydro, pour annoncer le financement fédéral du projet Peace Region Electricity Supply (PRES).
La demande d’électricité dans la région de South Peace augmente en raison de la prospection et au développement du gaz naturel. Pour répondre à la demande actuelle et future, BC Hydro agrandira les infrastructures de transport existantes en construisant deux lignes électriques parallèles de 230 kilovolts entre la future sous-station du site C près de Fort St John et la sous-station Groundbirch existante, située à environ 30 kilomètres à l’est de Chetwynd.
Une fois les travaux terminés, les industries et les entreprises de la région de Peace auront accès à une source d’énergie plus propre pour alimenter leurs activités, ce qui entraînera une réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre pouvant atteindre 2,6 mégatonnes par année.
Le gouvernement du Canada fournit jusqu’à 83,6 millions de dollars pour ce projet dans le cadre du plan Investir dans le Canada, tandis que BC Hydro fournit le reste, soit 205,4 millions de dollars.

Faits en bref:
- Le budget de 2019, Investir dans la classe moyenne, est le plan du gouvernement fédéral qui vise à créer plus d’emplois bien rémunérés, à mettre l’accession à la propriété à la portée d’un plus grand nombre de Canadiens, à aider les travailleurs à obtenir la formation dont ils ont besoin pour réussir, à soutenir les aînés et à jeter les bases du régime national d’assurance-médicaments.
- Puisque de nombreuses municipalités du Canada font face à de graves déficits d’infrastructure, le budget de 2019 prévoit un complément ponctuel de 2,2 milliards de dollars au Fonds de la taxe sur l’essence du gouvernement fédéral pour aider à répondre aux priorités à court terme des municipalités et des collectivités des Premières Nations.
- Le budget de 2019 s’appuie sur le plan Investir dans le Canada, en vertu duquel le gouvernement du Canada investit plus de 180 milliards de dollars sur 12 ans dans les infrastructures communautaires partout au pays.

Le projet créera jusqu’à 10 000 emplois pendant la construction et 950 emplois permanents dans le Nord de la Colombie-Britannique une fois les opérations en cours.
- BC Hydro prévoit des possibilités pour les apprentis qui travaillent sur le projet et des possibilités d’approvisionnement pour les petites et moyennes entreprises. Le projet procurera également des avantages sociaux et économiques aux groupes autochtones grâce à des possibilités de formation, d’emploi et d’approvisionnement.
