Canada Recognizes Industry Leaders and Expands Energy Efficiency Programs

Energy efficiency in industry strengthens competitiveness, lowers costs, maximizes profits and promotes a more sustainable environment. Promoting and rewarding energy-efficient practices are key components of Canada’s approach to transitioning to a clean energy future.

Canadian leaders in energy efficiency were celebrated today at the Canadian Industry Partnership for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) Leadership Awards. The Awards were presented during the biennial ENERGY SUMMIT in Vaughan, Ontario, co-hosted by Natural Resources Canada, Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC) and CIPEC.

These CIPEC leaders were honoured for their exceptional achievements in promoting and improving energy efficiency, cutting costs and improving productivity through sustainable energy use:

• Energy Management National Award: IBM Canada Ltd. and St Marys Cement (Canada) Inc. – Bowmanville Plant
• Future Leaders: Michael A. Abel and Naz Orang
• Corporate Stewardship: 3M Canada and Copper Mountain Mine (BC) Ltd.
• Employee Awareness and Training: New Gold Inc. – New Afton Mine and Tahoe Canada
• Energy Performance Management: Canfor Pulp Ltd. and Teck Highland Valley Copper
• Integrated Energy Efficiency Strategy: Cascades Inc. and Creemore Springs Brewery Limited
• Process and Technology Improvements: CNH Industrial and FCA Canada Inc. – Windsor Assembly Plant

CIPEC includes more than 2,500 facilities representing over 21 industrial sectors and over 50 trade associations. An award-winning partnership between the Government of Canada and Canadian industry, CIPEC advances industrial energy efficiency by promoting the uptake of energy management systems, best practices and technologies.

Recently, the ENERGY STAR® program was expanded to include the automotive and commercial baking sectors, and the ISO 50001 program was extended to cover commercial and institutional buildings. The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of energy efficiency and encourages businesses to take advantage of these available tools to help improve their energy use, competitiveness and profitability.
