What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
As the countdown to the fall House sitting shifts from weeks to days, Prime Minister Mark Carney and his front bench team are set to spend a second day ensconced in high-level, closed-door strategy sessions, which, as CBC News revealed last night, will include a presentation from a “prominent conservative figure in American politics” — namely, Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts, who is one of several “guest speakers” invited to address what Carney’s office is framing as a ‘Cabinet Planning Forum,’ which got underway in Toronto yesterday afternoon.
As CBC notes, Roberts is “the mastermind behind Project 2025,” a “a 900-page manifesto meant to usher in a new ultra-conservative administration,” which “is built on four main promises: restore the family as the centrepiece of American life; dismantle the administrative state; defend the nation’s sovereignty and borders; and secure God-given individual rights to enjoy liberty.”
