With less than 48 hours left on the clock until the latest make-or-break deadline for Canada to avoid the next wave of tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to roll out on Aug. 1, which could include an additional 35 per cent surtax on Canadian exports not covered by the continental trade deal currently in place, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to convene a “virtual cabinet meeting” to go over the latest developments — or, if applicable, the lack thereof — in the cross-border negotiations that have been underway since the president returned to the White House in January. Also on the agenda, according to his office: The “situation in the Middle East,” which, in addition to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, could include a discussion on whether Canada should recognize Palestinian statehood, as reported by iPolitics last night.
