After emerging from a virtual cabinet huddle yesterday evening to announce that Canada is prepared to recognize Palestinian statehood during the opening of the United Nations General Assembly this fall — although not without conditions, as iPolitics’ own Marco Vigliotti explains — Prime Minister Mark Carney will be staying off the radar today, according to his official itinerary.
While he may not have any public events on deck, it’s a safe bet that the prime minister will still be clocking in a full day at work as the clock ticks down to the current deadline for Canada and the United States to strike a deal to resolve the months-long cross-border trade dispute triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to roll out a fresh wave of tariffs on Aug. 1 — including, according to the open letter he posted to social media last week, a 35 per cent surtax on Canadian products not covered by the existing Canada — U.S. — Mexico free trade deal.
