Amid growing speculation — and media reports — that his government is in the final stages of negotiating an energy accord with Alberta that would roll back the industrial carbon targets set by his predecessor, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to unveil what his office is billing as a “new agenda to deliver clean, affordable and reliable energy for Canadians” that “outlines the government’s plan to displace the use of fossil fuels for transportation, buildings and heavy industry,” according to documents previewed by the Toronto Star. “It leans into expanding the use of Canada’s largely emissions-free hydro-generated electricity system but also preserves a role for natural gas especially in regions like Western Canada where it is used for ‘baseload power,’” the Star notes.
