What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
After clocking in several days on the midsummer hustings in British Columbia, Prime Minister Mark Carney is back in the capital with two high-level virtual meetings on deck, according to his itinerary: A mid-morning huddle with his front bench team (10 a.m.), as well as an afternoon call with provincial and territorial premiers. (1:30 p.m.)
While his office hasn’t provided any additional information on the topics to be discussed, it’s a safe bet that both conversations will likely be dominated by the latest developments in the cross-border trade standoff triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump — and, more specifically, the now-expired Aug. 1 deadline unilaterally set by the White House for other countries to strike a deal to avoid being hit by a fresh wave of tariffs.
