Before boarding his afternoon flight to Washington, D.C. — where, as previewed in What We’re Watching, he’s booked in for a one-on-one chat with U.S. President Donald Trump tomorrow — Prime Minister Mark Carney will squeeze in a quick meeting with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith (3:30 p.m.), but is not expected to make an appearance in his front-and-centre seat in the House of Commons, according to his itinerary.
As for that much-anticipated visit to the Oval Office, CBC News reports that Carney and his team are heading to the U.S. Capitol with “modest” expectations, and are hoping to secure “partial relief” from the Trump-imposed tariffs targeting Canada’s steel sector.
“According to three Canadian sources speaking to CBC News and Radio-Canada, the hope is that any sort of steel tariff relief will create a framework or an example for how other tariffs already imposed on Canada could be lowered as well,” the broadcaster notes.
