Canada’s National Observer: By the time Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the second tranche of “Major Projects” in mid-November, there were few surprises left; most of the projects had been leaked in advance, including BC’s North Coast Transmission Line and Ksi Lisims LNG.  But there was one unexpected addition: a kind of meta-major project covering a huge chunk of northern BC and part of the Yukon, which would from here on in be called the “Northwest Critical Conservation Corridor.”

This corridor, Carney said, “has extraordinary potential to unlock critical-minerals development [and] clean power transmission, all under Indigenous leadership.” Other major projects in the area, like the two named above, were considered part of this one.

But the crux of the “project,” worth tens of billions of dollars in investment in Carney’s estimation, wasn’t a development in the same sense as the mines, transmission line or LNG facility that had been rolled up with it. What was new here was something altogether different, Carney explained: “a new conservation area the size of Greece.”
