Carney’s critical minerals push meets Indigenous realities as Canada races to rival China’s supply dominance – APTN News

Ahead of the G7 summit, Ottawa’s plan to speed up mine approvals and position Canada as a “stable and ethical” supplier faces hard questions from Indigenous leaders who say consultation, infrastructure, and financing gaps still stand in the way.

The urgency that drove Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to rush the One Canadian Economy Act—Bill C-5—through Parliament this summer, frustrating Indigenous leaders who say they weren’t properly consulted, is now focused on fast-tracking the mining of critical minerals.

The parliamentary standing committee on natural resources has been hearing testimony from Indigenous leaders, mining experts and government officials.
