Klaza caribou herd among biggest concerns for one conservation analyst
The company developing the Casino mine released its environmental and socio-economic effects statement earlier this month, outlining the project’s potential impacts and mitigation measures.
The statement includes effects – both positive and negative – on fish, wildlife, human health, employment and the economy.
Western Copper and Gold’s proposed Casino project, west of Pelly Crossing, includes a heap leach facility, a tailings dam and a 198 kilometre access road. The mine would operate for 27 years, contributing $429 million to the territory’s annual GDP and creating thousands of jobs, according to the effects statement.
