A local environmental group working on a traditional aboriginal knowledge guide has awarded the Firelight Group a two-year contract to complete the final phase of the project.
The Cumulative Environmental Management Association has awarded $404,200 to the Victoria-based research group, which specializes in land-use planning and aboriginal relations.
“CEMA and its First Nations and Métis members have been crystal clear about the importance of strong community engagement and participation in developing the Traditional Knowledge Framework” said Craig Candler, an anthropologist with the group, in a statement. “We look forward to supporting this important project and working with everyone involved.”
While much of First Nation and Métis cultural practices are derided as pseudoscience, CEMA’s aboriginal stakeholders argue much of their views of the land are still firmly grounded in scientific principles.
