Closer ties recommended for Sarnia, local Indigenous people – The Sarnia Observer

Sarnia should be working closer with local Indigenous populations, consulting First Nations on projects affecting land and water, and embracing and acknowledging treaty history.

Those are among the recommendations coming to city council Monday from Sarnia’s United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples working group.

Among the working group’s 20 recommendations, are calls for codifying shared service agreements for things like fire and police in bylaw, having regular meetings between city leadership and local First Nations — Aamjiwnaang, Walpole Island, and Kettle and Stony Point — adopting a municipal duty to consult policy, dedicating city staff to liaise with Indigenous communities, having ongoing training for city leadership and staff, and hosting more joint community events, embracing and acknowledging local history.
