The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has published REGDOC-3.5.3, Regulatory Fundamentals. This regulatory document has been published without public consultation, as it is intended for information only and does not contain any guidance or requirements for CNSC licensees or applicants. However, the CNSC welcomes comments and suggestions on this document at any time.
REGDOC-3.5.3 describes the CNSC’s regulatory approach and philosophy, and outlines how the CNSC applies the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) and regulations made under the authority of the NSCA in its regulatory oversight of nuclear facilities and activities.
This document does not contain requirements. It is intended to:
The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
