Community Notice: October 25th Declared as Haldimand Treaty Day on Six Nations
For Immediate Release: October 8th, 2025 OHSWEKEN, ON – Six Nations of the Grand River 59th Elected Council (SNGREC) shares the following update with community from their September 9, 2025, meeting.
Haldimand Treaty Day
- October 25, 1784, is recognized as the date at which Sir Frederick Haldimand on behalf of His Majesty King George the Third, granted the Mohawks and others of the Six Nations who wished to settle along the banks of the Grand River six miles on either side of the Grand River, from its mouth to its source.
- SNGREC has officially declared October 25th as a sovereign holiday for Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR) employees to honour and recognize the importance of the Haldimand Treaty.
- SNGREC also encourages community organizations and local businesses to stand with us in recognizing Haldimand Treaty Day as a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our history and celebrate the strength and resilience of our people.
