Returning home from Calgary with the familiar mix of exhaustion and reflection that follows a major political convention.
The Conservative Party of Canada’s national convention was held in Calgary in late January, and as one of the largest political gatherings in the country, I went to observe, listen, and participate in shaping the direction of a party that holds significant influence over Canada’s political future.
Like any space I walk into, I am there as a First Nations woman. Often underrepresented and at times a little intimidated. I attended not as a guest or an observer on the sidelines, and not as an influencer tasked with promoting the party to Canadians. I attended as a regular delegate. I paid to be there, took my seat on the convention floor and participated in debate and policy votes the way delegates are meant to.
