Conservatives to call on Liberal government to ‘stop taxing food’ as Carney heads to London for more high-level meetings – iPolitics

For the second time this week, the Conservatives will get the chance to trigger a full day of debate — and, ultimately, a vote — on what their party will frame as yet another failure on the part of Prime Minister Mark Carney to live up to his campaign commitments — and, more specifically, his pledge that Canadians “would judge him by the cost at the grocery store.”

The non-binding motion, which stands in the name of the party’s agriculture critic, John Barlow, points to what it contends is a 40 per cent jump in “food prices … since the Liberals took power,”as well as a reported increase in visits to food banks, and challenges the House of Commons to call on the government to “stop taxing food by eliminating the industrial carbon tax on fertilizer and farm equipment,” as well as what it calls the “inflation tax” of “money-printing deficits,” as well as “the so-called clean fuel standard,” and “the food packaging tax.”
